Being a server definatly has its ups and downs. This job takes organization, skill, balance, and a little bit of luck that the customer I'm serving has worked in food and beverage before and understands that I cannot do 19 things at once. This is usually not the case. This job is one of the most annoying and rewarding jobs I have ever had.
Some advantages of this job is the money. On a busy night I could walk away with 2-3 hundred $ in tips. Working in a resort restaurant the summer months are the busiest. Another advantage is the people. Building the relationships with people as you work in a somewhat hectic work place is a way to make friends. Friends that are always up for a game of throw the jelly packets around the kitchen until a manager walks in. There are always those people that are unwilling to help others, those are usually the people that I walk away from when their tray of food is sliding into a customers lap, instead of readjusting that plate before it leaves the kitchen.
Some disadvantages of working in a restaurant; you must have somewhat thick skin and an ability to hold your tongue when a customer is yelling at you because their food is cold, when the only reason it was cold was it sat on their table while they talked about themselves for 45 minutes until they decided to eat.
However working in a restaurant is the best job I could have asked for while being a struggling full-time college student.
